The two executive decrees establishing the independence of the medical university training system in a specialized university called the “University of Health Sciences,” based in Algiers, were issued, according to the Official Gazette, issue number 68.

This concerns Executive Decree No. 24-320 dated 27 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1446, corresponding to October 1, 2024, establishing the University of Health Sciences, and amending Decree No. 84-209 dated 21 Dhu al-Qi’dah 1404, corresponding to August 18, 1984, relating to the organization and operation of the University of Algiers .

The faculties of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry are distributed across four well-known locations in Algiers, the most important of which is the new Faculty of Medicine in Ben Aknoun (Ziania), an architectural masterpiece built in the first decade of this century. The second location is in the municipality of Algiers Centre, known as La Perrine, and the third is at the University of Algiers 1 campus, where pharmacy students study primarily and which also houses a historic anatomy museum dating back to the colonial period. It is worth noting that this is the first time in Algeria’s history that a university dedicated to medical sciences has been established.
